How Does Sheet Metal Fabrication Work?

Sheet metal fabrication begins with precision cutting. We use laser, waterjet and CNC punch machines to trim thin metal sheets into custom holes, slots and complex outlines per your drawings.
We then bend cut metal parts into 3D structures like angles, frames and housings via press brake forming.
Finishing work covers part assembly, plus surface finishes including powder coating and anodizing to enhance sturdiness, look and corrosion resistance.
Choose Zorapid for trusted sheet metal solutions. We deliver accurate metal parts fast, covering prototype development all the way to mass production with steady quality.

FAQ

What’s the minimum sheet thickness you can fabricate? Maximum thickness limit?

Minimum thickness: 0.3 mm thin sheet for micro equipment shielding shells.

Standard processing range: 0.5 mm – 12 mm.

For heavy structural frames, we handle up to 20 mm thick carbon steel laser cutting.

Ultra-thin 0.3–0.8 mm sheets require customized fixture to avoid bending deformation.

Full in-house one-stop sheet metal workflow without outsourcing:

Laser cutting / fiber laser cutting, CNC bending, stamping, punching, TIG/MIG welding, riveting, tapping, CNC machining inserts, surface finishing, assembly.

We also provide small batch stamping and prototype laser sheet metal services.

Follow ISO 2768-mk sheet metal industrial tolerance standard:
  1. Linear dimension: ±0.1 mm ~ ±0.3 mm
  2. Bending angle tolerance: ±0.5°
  3. Hole positional tolerance: ±0.15 mm
For medical/semiconductor high-precision parts, we can tighten tolerance to ±0.05 mm via fixture calibration.
Springback is the natural rebound of metal after bending, causing inconsistent angles and dimensional deviation.
Our solutions to eliminate springback:
  1. Pre-compensate bending angle in CNC program in advance
  2. Use segmented bending dies for high-strength alloy (7075 aluminum, stainless steel)
  3. Add reinforcing ribs on thin sheet parts via DFM optimization
  4. Low-temperature stress relief for thick stainless steel before bending
We avoid secondary correction to guarantee consistent batch dimensional stability.
General industry rule we follow for manufacturability:
  • Aluminum 5052/6061: Min R = 1× sheet thickness
  • 304 stainless steel: Min R = 1.5× sheet thickness
  • Cold rolled steel SPCC: Min R = 0.8× sheet thickness
Designs with bend radius smaller than the standard value will crack at the bending edge; our engineers will adjust drawings during free DFM review.

Thin sheet below 1.0 mm is prone to warping after welding.

Our countermeasures: segmented skip welding sequence, fixture clamping during welding, post-weld stress leveling, and DFM advice to add reinforcing flanges to reduce deformation risk.
